Team Elite with Family Members in the Dojo

Sensei Carol

What is it like training with your family?

"Karate has supplied my family with a common ground. When we began training 8 years ago, we were all students learning together. Our boys, at a young age, were able to see us through trials and triumphs. We have all had the oppurtunity to be both critic and cheerleader. For months before our black belt test, we spent countless hours together learning and training side by side. It has given us a great appreciation for one another. Now that the boys are older and our relationship is changing from parent to coach, we have a solid foundation to build on; karate has been key in establishing this connection."

Sensei Carol has three members of her family that train along with her in the dojo.  They are all Black Belts.

What is it like training with your family?

"Training in traditional Okinawan Karate has so many benefits that I've we've often thought about writing a book on the subject.  We have 7 members of our family that are currently training, which include, us (Shihan and Shidoshi), our children Joey (A new Junior Brown Belt), Hannah (a new Little Samurai graduate), our cousin Dr. Christian Andersen (a Black Belt), and his three children Griffin (a new Junior Black Belt), Zachary and Camille (both Junior Brown Belts).  The most important benefit we all receive is the enhanced ability to defend ourselves from many dangerous things, including, attackers, predators, bullies (large and small), obesity, lack of exercise, and negativity.  In addition, it gives us all something in common, and like any great community it provides us with the right atmosphere to engage other like-minded families and have our kids exposed to the glass half-full.  We regularly use the Karate Creed as a reference for proper behavior.  Also, we probably get into more discussions about honor, bravery, integrity, perseverance, etc. than most families who focus primarily on, say,  more competitive sports or video games do.   The support we all feel for each other is another is awesome benefit of training together.  In the end, it becomes a lifestyle that compliments everything we do in life."

Sensei Dean

What is it like training with your family?

"Training at the academy with my son Johnny has been a great experience for me. Watching my son thrive with character traits such as respect, self discipline and following directions is what its all about but having something in common with my son is what makes it special. There have been times when I come home from the Dojo with my gi on and Johnny will run to his room and put his gi on and will say dad lets do karate or lets spar, on those occasions I realize just how much he enjoys what he is learning. I look forward to watching my son grow at the Academy along with the special interest that we share."

Sempai Terry

What is it like training with your family?

"Hearty laughter, less stress, open communication, and whole lot of fun is what I have gotten out of training with my family.  For several years I sat in the reception area and chatted, a free class later, I was hooked.  While we practiced together, we would talk, laugh, learn, and most importantly listen.   Those sessions developed a level of communication that made the pesky “Tween” year’s flyby and gave me an insight into my sons that I will cherish.  The truth is I never could figure out who was having had more fun.    Now years later, we have added to our ranks, my husband has joined us. Yes, we still train, spar, practice, talk, laugh, and enjoy karate and each others company.  The saying is true; the family that kicks together sticks together. "

Sensei Jess

What is it like training with your family?

"There is nothing better than doing something fun and positive together with your child. My son, Caleb, is 3 years old and he is a Little Dragon here at ATK, and I absolutely love watching him enjoy something that is so passionate for me. Karate has been a very important part of my life and I have waited a long time to start my son down his own path. So far, he is very excited to be here and he jumps up and down every time he sees me in my gi because he thinks he is going to karate, too! Karate for me means fitness, stress reduction, comraderie with other adults and self-defense, amongst many other attributes. For Caleb, my husband and I are looking, primarily, for self confidence, strength, and socialization with other children his own age. He thinks he is just here to have fun, but it is so much more than that! We look forward to seeing Caleb and my other son, Jacoby, grow up to be leaders, and to be focused, respectful, confident young men, and I know karate will have a huge influence on this. Also, when typical adolescent development tries to separate boys from parents, I know our relationship will stay strong because we have a common healthy focus in our lives."

Sensei Jess trains along with her son Caleb.
