Fuji Kata Dai Ichi, Fukyugata Ichi (First Basic Form)
Fuji Kata Dai Ichi was composed by Shoshin Nagamine the originator of Matsubayashi-ryu,
since the existing kata proved too difficult for beginners to learn.
Note: All punches are done to the solar plexus and all stances are walking stances,
unless otherwise noted.
- From Yoi (Attention), with left hand over right: Step
left into a Front Leaning Stance, low block left. (Blocking
a low kick from an attacker on left).
- Step right to a walking stance and punch right. (Punching
an attacker).
- Looking over right shoulder, turn 180 degrees by stepping
right foot to the East into a Front Leaning Stance,
low block right. (Blocking a low kick from another attacker behind
you).
- Step left to walking stance and punch left. (Punching
an attacker).
- Turn 90 degrees to left by stepping left into Front
Leaning Stance, low block left. (Blocking a low
kick from another attacker
not to your left).
- Step right to walking
stance, punch right. (Punching an attacker).
- Step left, punch left. (Punching an attacker
a second time).
- Step right, punch right. (Punching an attacker
a third time).
- Looking over the left shoulder, cross the
left foot behind towards the East, pivot
on the right foot,
turning
225 degrees
(SE corner), stepping left into Front Leaning
Stance, low block left. (Blocking a low kick from an attacker
now behind
you,
at an angle.).
- Step right, high block right. (Blocking
a high punch or overhead strike from an attacker).
- Step right 90 degrees into Front Leaning
Stance, low block right. (Blocking a
low kick from an attacker
now
to your right,
at an angle).
- Step left, high block left. (Blocking a
high punch or overhead strike from an
attacker).
- Move the left foot to the left 45 degrees,
punch right and Kiai (yell). (Taking
offense against another
attacker,
no time
to block, on your left).
- Step right, punch left. (Punching an
attacker a second time).
- Step left, punch right. (Punching
an attacker a third time).
- Step right, punch left. (Punching
an attacker a fourth time).
- Look over the left shoulder,
cross left foot behind to
the West, pivot
on the right
foot,
turning 225 degrees

stepping left into Front
Leaning Stance, low block left. (Blocking

- Step right, high punch (Upper
lip height) right. (Punching
an attacker in the face).
- Step right 90 degrees into

step back to Yoi (Attention),
with left hand
