Fuji Kata Dai Ni, Fukyugata Ni (Second Basic Form)

Fuji Kata Dai Ichi was composed by Chojun Miyagi the originator of Goju-ryu, since the existing kata proved too difficult for beginners to learn.

Note: All punches are done to the solar plexus and all stances are walking stances, unless otherwise noted.

  1. Start from Yoi, facing north, look left, step out with the right foot and turn facing the left into a walking stance, high block.
  2. Step through right into a walking stance, punch right to the face.
  3. Step back with the right foot into a straddle stance, low block left.
  4. Look right, step ½ way up left into a walking stance, high block right.
  5. Step through left into a walking stance, punch left to the face.
  6. Step back deep with the left foot, sliding back into a straddle stance, low block right.
  7. Look to the front, step left into a walking stance, chest block left.
  8. Step right into a walking stance, chest block right.
  9. Front kick left, and as the left leg comes back down (stepping through left) to the floor into a front leaning stance, strike with the left elbow to the face and kiai.
  10. Low block left, reverse punch right.
  11. Looking over the right shoulder, cross the arms across your body, with the right arm over the left, slide the right foot (back foot) towards the left foot (front foot) to a standing position (feet parallel and shoulder width apart), shuto strike right to the neck of an opponent to the south.
  12. Step left into a walking stance to the south, chest block left.
  13. Front kick right, and as the right leg comes back down (stepping through right) to the floor into a front leaning stance, strike with the right elbow to the face.
  14. Low block right, reverse punch left.
  15. Looking over the left shoulder, cross the arms across your body, with the left arm over the right, slide the left foot (back foot) towards the right foot (front foot) to a standing position (feet parallel and shoulder width apart), shuto strike left.
  16. Step back with the left foot coming to meet the right foot to form a degree angle (facing north) with the feet (similar to yoi starting position), simultaneously cross your arms. Continue to step back into a front leaning stance with the left and double chest block. Recoil arms and double punch, with the left fist striking solar plexus level and simultaneously striking with the right fist floating rib level (fist turned up, aligning it with the right leg).
  17. Step up with the left foot into a front leaning stance, cross your arms, step back right, double block, recoil arms and double punch, with the right fist striking solar plexus level and simultaneously striking with the left fist floating rib level (fist turned up, aligning it with left leg).
  18. Return to Yoi.
