Purple Belt - Nanakyu, Adult Requirements

You may test for your belt between 3-4 months.  You will be awarded a stripe with the date of your promotional when you pass.  You may test for your Purple stripe after one month in rank.

Upon earning a Nanakyu the student should transition to the intermediate class. Discuss this with your instructor.

Gold Belt with Purple Stripe

Kihon (Basics)
Drills

Walk down the floor in a proper Zenkutsu Dachi.

Demonstrate Ippon Kumite Dai Ichi (1st One step fighting drill).

Kata (Form)

Perform the 1st 9 moves of Pinan Nidan.

Life

Explain at least 5 ways to handle a bully/obnoxious person. (Hint: Friends, Humor, Trickery, Walk Away, Agree, Refuse, Stand Up, Scream, Ignore, Authority, Reason, Karate Stance) - Handout

Household Safety: Explain what to do around electricity, household poisons/cleaners/prescriptions, etc.

Physical
Self-Defense

15 Jumping Jacks, 15 Push-ups, 15 Sit-ups and 15 Mountain Climbers

Self-Defense: Demonstrate grabbing an opponent and hiza geri.

Flexibility: Increase side kick stretch by 2 inches.

 

Purple Belt - Nanakyu (7th level) - All of the previous requirements, plus:

Kihon (Basics)
Drills

Jiyu Kumite (Free Style Sparring) Explain the 4 levels of kumite.

Level 1 - Footwork in a Kamae (Fighting Stance)
Level 2 - Techniques thrown with no contact whatsoever
Level 3 - Blocking contact only
Level 4 - Controlled techniques back and forth, with light contact to the gi in the midsection only, no contact to the head, neck, back, legs, groin, or kidneys

Kata (Form)

Perform Pinan Nidan (2nd Peace Form).

Research Okinawan history using the internet or the library.

Each progress stripe requires 1 month (8 classes). You will be tested for your next belt after passing all four stripes. You will be awarded a 5th stripe with the date of your promotional when you pass. You will be asked to perform your highest kata at your promotional.

Show you can still do Fuji Kata Dai Ichi & Ni.

Hiza Geri (Knee) and Empi Uchi, (Elbow strike) & Sparring Games (Distance & "1 for 1, 2 for 2, and 3 for 3")

Explain the difference between self-discipline and discipline.

Self-Defense: Demonstrate high intensity elbow/knee strikes on a bag.

Flexibility:Increase side kick stretch by 2 inches and front heel to ball of back foot split by 2 inches.

 

Jr. Purple Belt - Nanakyu (7th level) - All of the previous requirements, plus:

Test for Belt after Passing Previous 4 Stripes

Perform Pinan Nidan (2nd Peace Form).

Explain how you are self-disciplined at home.

Recite the Karate Creed.

Support for your dojo: Bring in one friend to watch or try karate.
